These Are a Few of Our Favorite Drinks: The Sound of Music Reimagined with Sing-Along Cocktails

The Sound of Music is a musical drama set in late 1930's Salzberg, Austria.  A seemingly unruly nun, Maria (Julie Andrews) has received and assignment to be the governess to seven children of a widower, revered and retired from the navy, Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer).  Maria and the children still grieving their mother are off to a rough start, but Maria's unrelenting kindness help them bond while their father is away with his fiancé Baroness Elsa Schraeder (Peggy Wood) in Vienna.  Upon his return, Maria has restored singing, dancing, and happiness to the home but lowered the decorum the Captain prefers.  Surprisingly, this softens the Captain's heart towards Maria.

My Favorite Things is one of the most iconic songs to come out of The Sound of Music, It is one of the most iconic songs in the show tunes genre.  The Raindrops on Roses cocktail is inspired straight from My Favorite Things.  To get the flavor of roses just after a rainstorm, this cocktail combines Vodka, Rose Water, Lemon Juice and Agave, and a touch of grenadine for the pretty pink color of the pink lemonade Uncle Max turns down for "something stronger".  Shake the cocktail to get it very cold, strain into a coupe and garnish with a lemon peel rosette for the color contrast.  This cocktail is beautiful, and tastes floral, and bright with just enough sweetness to balance the rose water.  Raindrops on Roses is the perfect Sound of Music pink lemonade, one that Uncle Max would approve of.

Another iconic song from The Sound of Music and as a show tune, The Sound of Music.  Inspired by the song and the Alpine hillside during World War II, The Hills Are Alive is a cocktail that blends equal parts Mezcal, Amaro Montenegro, Zirbenz Pine Schnapps, and Itallicus for an herbal forest flavor with a light smoke of a hillside scarred by cannon fire.  Ginger syrup is added to balance the flavors and add a little pit of warming spice.  Serve in a highball with crushed ice like the broken rocks and boulders of the hillside and sprinkle with some black flake salt to garnish.  Even after the war made its way through the Austrian Alps, the hills still sing their song of 1000 years. This cocktail will help you sing along.

The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the Von Trapp family during World War II.  As in the movie, they did form the Von Trapp Family Singers and performed in various places after they fled Salzberg.  The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Von Trapp inspired a movie that broke records and is still being shown around the world.  If you decide to watch The Sound of Music or host a sing-along, here are two cocktails that will wet your whistle when you do!
